tHE hEART BEHIND THE SWING
My name is John Hernandez, and I’m a disabled combat veteran and proud resident of Lubbock, Texas. After my time in the military, I faced the same invisible wounds many other Veterans carry — PTSD, isolation, and the ongoing challenge of reintegration into civilian life. That’s why I founded Operation Back 9, a nonprofit golf clinic designed specifically for veterans dealing with PTSD. We use the game of golf not just for recreation, but as a powerful therapeutic tool — helping veterans build confidence, connect with others who understand their struggles, and find a renewed sense of peace.
At Operation Back 9, we believe healing begins with connection—and sometimes, that starts with a simple round of golf. Our veteran-led nonprofit is dedicated to helping military veterans living with PTSD by combining the therapeutic power of golf with the strength of peer support.
Built by veterans, for veterans, Operation Back 9 provides a trusted space where service members can come together, share their experiences, and support one another on and off the course. Through group outings, golf clinics, and one-on-one mentorship, we create opportunities for camaraderie, healing, and renewed purpose.
Golf is our tool. Peer support is our foundation. Together, they help veterans find peace, rebuild confidence, and reclaim joy—one swing at a time. Operation Back 9 beautifully blends the spirit of a second chance with the peace and focus of golf.
